RésuméL’abbaye de Vaucelles, fondée en 1132 par Bernard de Clairvaux au sud de Cambrai, a fondé (ou du moins participé à la fondation de) deux abbayes en Grande-Bretagne au xiie siècle. Elle a fondé directement une abbaye, celle de Rushock, dans le diocèse d’Hereford ; mais cette abbaye appartient à la cohorte mal connue des fondations avortées. Elle a d’autre part participé avec Clairvaux à la fondation de Whitland, et a gardé des liens avec celle-ci et avec sa fille, Strata Florida. De nombreux moines de Vaucelles étaient anglais ou gallois : bien que ce ne fût sans doute pas sa destination de départ, Vaucelles devint vers 1150 une sorte de camp de base pour la création d’abbayes cisterciennes au Pays de Galles et au sud-ouest de l’Angleterre.

The English and Welsh Foundations of Vaucelles AbbeyVaucelles Abbey, founded in 1132 by Bernard of Clairvaux south of Cambrai, founded in turn (or at least contributed to the foundation of) two abbeys in Great Britain in the xiith century. It was directly responsible for the foundation of one abbey, Rushock’s Abbey, in the Diocese of Hereford ; but this abbey belongs to the ill-documented cohort of the aborted foundations. Vaucelles’s took part also, in partnership with Clairvaux’s, to the foundation of Whitland’s, and kept close ties with it and with its daughter, Strata Florida. Many monks in Vaucelles were English or Welsh : although it was certainly not its original destination, Vaucelles became around 1150, a kind of base camp for the creation of Cistercian abbeys in Wales and the south of England.
