Les hôpitaux généraux du Nord de la France sont les premières institutions de secours pour les pauvres orphelins. Ces enfants sans père ou mère sont parfois plus nombreux que les enfants trouvés et abandonnés, si présents dans la recherche historique en Europe occidentale. Les administrateurs les admettent au même titre que les vagabonds et mendiants ou les pauvres honteux de la ville. Il existe de multiples secours organisés pour les orphelins, depuis les pauvriseurs des paroisses jusqu’aux hôpitaux généraux, en passant par des maisons spécialisées ou des fondations. Néanmoins, ces établissements présentent un profil commun, marqué par une grande insistance sur la légitimité des enfants accueillis et surtout sur leur origine sociale qui est connue.

The administrators admit them on the same terms as they do the vagrants and beggars or the shamefully poor of the town. There exist a number of relief operations in favor of the orphans, from the parish « pauvriseurs » to the general hospitals to specialized houses or foundations. However, these facilities share a common profile characterized by a strong emphasis on the legitimacy of the children in care and above all on their social origin, as it is clearly identified.
