Le héraut joue un rôle essentiel dans la guerre médiévale. On connaît surtout ce personnage à travers le port des cartels de déclaration de guerre ou dans son rôle de publication de la paix, mais il ne faudrait pas négliger son rôle sur le champ de bataille en tant qu’estafette, agent de liaison entre le commandement et les troupes, ou comme agent de renseignement. L’exemple du héraut bourguignon à la fin du Moyen âge nous montre le très large éventail des missions qui lui sont dévolues dans le domaine de la diplomatie ducale, des campagnes militaires, ou plus marginalement dans le cadre de l’espionnage et de la diplomatie souterraine.
