Paul Nash est un peintre anglais né à la fin du xixe siècle. D’esprit romantique, il commence ses études d’art à la célèbre Slade School de Londres en 1910 et entame une carrière de peintre d’esprit moderne lorsque la première guerre mondiale est déclarée. La manière dont il aborde le conflit, avec d’abord une approche romantique des choses durant un séjour relativement calme dans les Flandres, lui fait subir d’autant plus durement le choc de la dernière offensive de la bataille de Passchendaele à laquelle il assiste à la fin de l’année 1917. C’est pourtant cette dernière qui permettra au peintre d’accéder au premier sommet de son art.

Paul Nash is an English painter born at the end of the xixth century. Of a Romantic mood, he starts studying art at the famous Slade School of London in 1910 and starts a career as painter in the modern spirit when World War One breaks out. The way in which he looks at the conflict, with first a Romantic approach of matters during a relatively quiet stay in Flanders, makes him feel all the more severely the schock of the last offensive of the battle of Passchendaele of which he is a witness in late 1917. It is this event, though, which will help the artist reach the first summit of his art.
