La question monétaire, l’une des seules relatives au rattachement de la Flandre wallonne au royaume de France par le traité d’Aix-la-Chapelle qui n’ait pas encore été étudiée, est le sujet de cet article. Après avoir établi la physionomie de la circulation monétaire et le cours des espèces pour les premiers mois de l’installation française, le programme de Colbert de « franciser » le monnayage dans cette contrée est présenté ainsi que les dispositions prises par la monarchie pour y parvenir, à commencer par la participation des représentants des autorités locales qui semblent déjà supplantés par les officiers parisiens.

Money Circulation in Walloon Flanders in the Wake of its Conquest by Louis XIVThe money issue, one of the few related to the transfer of Walloon Flanders to the Kingdom of France decided by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle that has not been studied so far, is the subject matter of this article. After outlining the profile of money circulation and the rates of exchange of the currencies over the first months of French establishment, this article introduces Colbert’s program for the ‘francization’ of minting in the region as well as the actions taken by the monarchy to achieve that goal, the first of which being the part played by representatives of local authorities who quickly seem to be superseded by officers from Paris.
