Cet article vise à interroger la relation très singulière nouée, durant plusieurs décennies, entre l’un des hommes politiques majeurs de la Troisième République, Alexandre Ribot (1842-1923), et un courtier maritime de Calais, Georges Foissey (1825-1914). Bien qu’officiellement peu impliqué dans la politique institutionnelle, le second a transmis au premier sa connaissance du terrain électoral, les rudiments du « métier d’élu » et a assuré, dans la 2e circonscription de Boulogne-sur-Mer entre 1878 et 1885, la fonction de « député résidant », permettant ainsi à son ami de se consacrer à sa carrière politique nationale.

The deputy and his double: the friendship between Alexandre Ribot and Georges FoisseyThis paper intends to analyse the enduring and close relationship forged between Alexandre Ribot (1842-1923), one of the key politicians of the Third Republic, and Georges Foissey (1825-1914), a shipbroker from Calais. Though officially little involved in institutional policy, the latter passed on to Ribot his knowledge of the local electorate, as well as the rudiments of the “function of elected representative”. He furthermore acted as député résidant (“ residing deputy”) in the 2nd constituency of Boulogne-sur-Mer between 1878 and 1885, thus enabling his friend to devote himself to his national political career.
