Construite de 1645 à 1672, l’église des Dominicains de Lille était l’une des plus grandes de la ville et conjuguait deux langages architecturaux, d’une part, le traditionnel et d’autre part, le moderne. Construite à « la romaine » par sa façade tripartite, à trois niveaux, à aileron et volute comme de nombreuses églises lilloises comme les Capucines Pénitentes, sur le modèle aussi de certaines églises des Pays-Bas espagnols telle les Brigittines de Bruxelles, elle s’inscrivait également dans le baroque flamand par sa décoration intérieure (colonnes baguées, mobiliers liturgiques et peintures…). En revanche, cette église des Dominicains était traditionnelle par son gothique du xviie siècle, ses voûtes d’ogives et d’arêtes, ses arcs brisés et sa galerie tournante, héritage des anciennes églises médiévales (cathédrales, collégiales et abbatiales) restant ainsi ancrée dans la tradition architecturale des Pays-Bas espagnols qu’elle soit gothique ou baroque.

Built from 1645 to 1672, the Dominicains’ Church of Lille was one of the largest in the city and combined two architectural languages, on the one hand the traditional and on the other hand the modern. Built in Roman style with its tripartite facade on three levels with « aileron » and « volute », like many churches in Lille such as the Penitents Capucine Church. The Dominicains’ Church of Lille is also like other churches in the Spanish Netherlands such as the Brigittins in Brussels. It was also part of the Flemish baroque with its interior decoration of ringed columns, liturgical furniture and paintings. On the other hand, this Dominicains’ Church was built according to the traditional 17th century Gothic style with its rib vaults and ridges, its pointed arches and its revolving gallery. A heritage of the old medieval churches (cathedrals, collegiate churches and abbey churches) thus remaining anchored in the architectural tradition of the Spanish Netherlands, be it gothic or baroque.
