Cet article fait référence à l'œuvre d’Anish Kapoor, l'un des plus grands sculpteurs contemporains. Plusieurs critiques ont cherché à expliquer son travail par son origine ethnique et sa vie en Grande-Bretagne. Mais lui-même a toujours refusé ces interprétations. L’auteur montre comment, dans une époque où « mondialisation » et « identité » semblent faire si bon ménage, des artistes n’en existent pas moins qui, non seulement, refusent de se prêter à un tel jeu, mais renouvellent aussi, chacun à sa façon, la figure de l’artiste « universel » pour notre temps.

This article focuses on the work of the famous sculptor Anish Kapoor. Various commentors have tried to explain his work in terms of his ethnic origin and his life in Britain. But he himself has always resisted such interpretations. By doing so at a time when globalisation and quest for identity seem to go hand in hand, he is a fascinating example of an artist who defies this trend and attempts to renew, in his own terms the ideal of the “universal” artist for our time.
