RésuméPenser son handicap, c’est faire référence aux autres. L’homme, d’un contexte culturel à l’autre, a sa manière de concevoir la blessure, de l’imaginer. L’auteur tente donc de cerner, de manière opératoire, les diverses significations qui lui sont conférées.Ainsi, à partir des travaux de François Laplantine, il propose huit modèles qui permettent de se saisir du « désordre » des représentations du handicap qui, au fil du temps et des cultures, n’a cessé d’interpeller la conscience humaine. Ces modèles amènent à discerner, au-delà de la singularité du handicap, parfois radicale, les universaux de l’humanité.

Reflecting on one’s handicap necessarily implies considering it in terms of others. From one cultural context to another, man has his own ways of considering this wound, of imagining it. The author of this article adopts an operative stance to shed light on the diverse meanings attributed to handicaps.Basing his ideas on the work of François Laplantine, the author sets forward eight models which allow us to grasp the notion of ‘disorder’ which have imbued representations of handicaps down the centuries and across cultures, in that handicaps have always been a subject of intense interrogation for the human conscience. These models will help us distinguish the universal characteristics of handicaps over and above the singularity, however radical this may be, of individual cases.
