L’apparition mariale de Pontmain (17 janvier 1871) qui s’inscrit dans l’élan de dévotion mariale de la France du xixe siècle a la particularité de se situer à la fin de la guerre franco-prussienne. La concomitance entre les deux événements a nourri une tradition attribuant le repli prussien à l’intercession de la Vierge Marie. Après avoir rappelé l’événement de Pontmain (Mayenne), la communication montre dans quelle mesure ses liens avec le conflit ont d’abord donné une connotation nationale, voire nationaliste, au pèlerinage à l’origine duquel il a été. Cette tendance s’est estompée à partir de la fin des années 1930, notamment dans la période postérieure au concile Vatican II, au profit d’un approfondissement du message spirituel de Pontmain.

The apparition of the Virgin Marie at Pontmain (on January 17, 1871) fits into the devotion of the blessed Virgin in France during the 19th century. Its main characteristic is that it takes place at the end of the Franco-Prussian war. The coincidence of both events has led to a tradition linking the Prussian withdrawal to Virgin Marie’s intercession. The notice first recounts the event at Pontmain. Then it shows in what way its connection to the war has first given a national (not to say nationalistic) connotation to the pilgrimage it inspired. But after the late 1930s, interest for that connotation has lessened, and all the more so during the period after the second Vatican council, which led to a better knowledge of the spiritual message of Pontmain.
