La perfectibilité définit l’homme moderne. L’humain s’éprouve non pas comme une donnée de nature, mais comme un être se créant au fil du temps et n’ayant d’autre fin que lui-même. D’où le rêve d’une émancipation à l’égard des limites de la condition. Les transhumanistes espèrent augmenter l’homme jusqu’à pouvoir offrir l’immortalité à certains. Mais cette espérance n’est-elle pas aussi bien une menace de voir disparaître toute possibilité de vie sensée ? Ce qui amène à réfléchir sur le sens de la mort tant pour l’humanité dans son ensemble que pour les personnes qui la composent.

Human nature is not viewed as a fact of nature but as a work in progress with no other end in sight but itself. Hence the dream of overcoming our basic biological limits. Transhumanists hope to augment the human condition and human organism to the point of offering immortality to some people. However, doesn’t this prospect incur the risk of annihilating all chances at a reasonable life ? This brings one to reflect on the meaning of death for the whole of mankind and individuals alike.
