En 1981, le groupe Pechiney-Ugine-Kuhlmann, l’un de nos grands champions nationaux, est au bord de la faillite. La nationalisation révèle vite ses limites. Les rêves industriels s’effacent rapidement devant les réalités de la concurrence internationale. Une grande restructuration s’impose afin de repartir sur de nouvelles bases. Elle est l’œuvre de Georges Besse (1927-1986), PDG, homme d’action et véritable sauveur de Pechiney, qu’il recentre sur l’aluminium. Mais un redressement durable s’avère difficile, malgré l’action de Jean Gandois (1930-), nouveau PDG, et l’acquisition d’American National Can (ANC) en 1988. En 1990-93, Pechiney replonge dans la crise, sans vraiment être prête pour la privatisation réalisée fin 1995.

In 1981, the Pechiney-Ugine-Kuhlmann Group, one of our big national champions, was almost bankrupt. The nationalization revealed fast its limits. The industrial dreams quickly faded in front of the realities of the international competition. A big restructuring was imperative to start all over again. It was the work of Georges Besse (1927-1986), Chairman and CEO, man of action and real rescuer of Pechiney, whom refocused this Group on the aluminum. But a long-lasting recovery turned out to be difficult, in spite of the action of Jean Gandois (1930-), new CEO, and American National Can’s acquisition (ANC) in 1988.
