La présente contribution se donne pour objectif d’analyser certains apports et limites de la théorie du choix rationnel au problème des liens entre le micro et le macro. Elle examine, en premier lieu, les critiques que Coleman adresse à la théorie wébérienne de L’éthique protestante et met en évidence les contresens – ainsi que leurs fondements méta-théoriques – que Coleman commet en interprétant l’œuvre de Weber. Elle tente de prouver que non seulement la théorie du sociologue allemand identifie les mécanismes de passage du micro au macro mais qu’elle est plus puissante que celle de l’utilité attendue pour rendre compte de macrophénomènes, tel le capitalisme, et pour nous aider à comprendre non pas l’émergence d’une norme – ce que la théorie du choix rationnel fait du reste –, mais celle d’une constellation de normes intégrées. Elle montre, en second lieu, en quoi la théorie de la rationalité instrumentale ne fait que prolonger les apports d’une des orientations de la tradition sociologique sur l’émergence des normes comme celle de Hobbes, et rappelle certains problèmes qui n’y ont pas encore reçu d’éléments de réponse satisfaisants.

Micro-macro transitions: the limitations of rational choice theory in Coleman’s Foundations of Social Theory. The purpose of this article is to analyze some contributions, but above all the limitations, of rational choice theory with regard to the problem of connections between micro and macro. Coleman’s criticismsofWeber’s theory in The Protestant Ethic are examined; his misinterpretations of Weber, and the metatheoretical bases for them, are brought to light. It is shown that Weber’s theory not only identifies the mechanisms for moving from micro to macro, but that it accounts more effectively for macrophenomena such as capitalism than does the theory of expectedutility, and is more useful for understanding the emergencenot of a singlenorm (which rational choice theory itself explains) but a constellation of integrated norms. It then shows how instrumental rationality theory does no more than extend the contributions of traditional sociological approaches to norm emergence, such as Hobbes’, and recalls certain problems to which instrumental rationality theory has not provided satisfactory responses.

Las transiciones micro-macro. Los límites de la teoría de la elección racional en las Foundations of social theory. Elobjetivo deesta contribuciónesanalizar ciertos aportesy límites dela teoríade laelección racional al problema de los lazos entre lo micro y lo macro. Examina primero las críticas que Coleman hace a la teoría Weberiana de L’éthique protestante poniendo en evidencia sus contrasentidos – así como sus fundamentos meta-téoricos – comentados por Coleman cuandointerpreta a Weber. Die Übergänge von Mikro zu Makro. Grenzen der Theorie zu rationalen Wahl in den Foundations of social theory. Der vorliegende Aufsatz möchte bestimmte Beiträge und Grenzen der Theorie der rationalen Wahl zumProblemder Verbindungen zwischenMikro undMakrountersuchen. Zunächst prüfter dievonColemananderWeberschenTheoriederProtestantischen Ethik geübteKritikunderklärt dieWidersprüche – wieauchderenmetatheoretischenGrundlagen– indieColemanbei derInterpretation des Weberschen Werks verfällt. Der Aufsatz möchte nachweisen, daß die Theorie des deutschen Soziologen nicht nur die Übergangsmechanismen von Mikro zu Makro identifiziert, sondernauchwirksamer istalsdieTheoriedeserwartetenNutzens,umdieMakrophänomenewie zum Beispiel den Kapitalismus zu erklären und zum besseren Verständnis nicht etwa der Entstehung einer Norm verhilft – was im übrigen die Theorie der rationalen Wahl macht – sondern der Entstehung einer Konstellation von integrierten Normen. Darüber hinaus zeigt der Aufsatz, wie die Theorie der instrumentalen Rationalität lediglich die Beiträge einer der Orientierungen der soziologischen Tradition auf die Entstehung von Normen wie die von Hobbes erweitert. Er führt bestimmte Probleme auf, die hier noch keine zufriedenstellenden Antworten gefunden haben.
