For Michel Fain, mentalisation is organized and based on the maternal mind and its capacity to enhance working through the experience of what is lacking. Thus he insisted, in his development of the theory of the genesis of fantasy life, on primary genitality as a basis on which the mind of the child is constructed – with the censorship of the lover which introduces a third party, organizes primary hysterical identification, and leads to stranger anxiety.

ZusammenfassungFür Michael Fain organisiert sich die Mentalisierung ausgehend von der mütterlichen Psyche und ihrer Fähigkeit dazu, den Umgang mit Mangelsituationen zu fördern. So betont er in seiner Theoretisierung der Entstehung des phantasmatischen Lebens die genitale Stufe, auf die sich die Psyche des Kindes aufbaut – mit der « Zensur der Geliebten », die einen Dritten einführt, die primäre hysterische Identifizierung organisiert und den Beginn der Angst vor dem fremden Gesicht bedeutet.
