Après-coup traumatique de la mort du père, conversion hystérique, maladie psychosomatique, mélancolie, la blessure au pied de l’enfant-futur écrivain s’inscrit dans le texteet bouscule les certitudes nosographiques. Devançant sur ce point les intuitions freudiennes, la littérature vient apporter un éclairage décisif de nature à faire progresser la réflexion psychanalytique.

Bringing together a little-known short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne and a disturbing episode from the writer’s childhood, this article, rather than attempting a psycho-biography, comes down on the side of doubt. Whether it was a traumatic deferred action of his father’s death, a hysterical conversion, psychosomatic illness, or melancholy, the foot injury sustained as a child by the writer-to-be inscribes itself in the text, unsettling nosographic certainties. In this respect, literature runs ahead of Freudian intuitions and sheds a decisive light that will help to advance psychoanalytical reflection.
