Qu’est-ce qui guide la politique d’une traduction de Freud ? Qu’en est-il des représentations-but des traducteurs lorsqu’ils impriment une marque au texte traduit, que ce soit au nom de la scientificité, de l’authenticité, ou de l’étrange opacité de la langue familière ? Comment fonctionne le transfert entre le traducteur excité par l’original et le lecteur tenu par le désir de posséder le texte malgré tout ? La résistance du texte d’origine, la perte inéluctable des polysémies, l’impossibilité d’exporter la rythmique syntaxique, les réductions lexicographiques auxquelles procède nécessairement le traducteur contraignent à une grande modestie. Celle-ci se heurte pourtant au pouvoir ambigu de ces entremetteurs entre les langues, qui se réfèrent à des visées et des héritages très disparates. En examinant plusieurs traductions en anglais et en français, l’auteur fait apparaître la radicale hétérogénéité des divers projets, interrogeant le destin de la part de destructivité inhérente à l’acte traductif.

What guides the policy behind a translation of Freud? What can be said about the purposive ideas of translators when they stamp their mark on a translated text, whether in the name of scientificity, authenticity or the strange opacity of familiar language? How does the transference function between the translator who is excited by the original and the reader who, in spite of everything, is eager to read the text? The resistance of the original text, the inevitable loss of polysemies, the impossibility of exporting the syntactic rhythm, and the lexicographical reductions that the translator necessarily effects require considerable modesty. And yet this modesty clashes with the ambiguous power of these go-betweens between languages, who refer to very disparate aims and legacies. In examining a number of translations in English and in French, the author reveals the radical heterogeneity of diverse projects and looks at the vicissitudes of the role of destructiveness inherent in the act of translation.

La resistencia del texto original, la pérdida ineluctable de las polisemias, la imposibilidad de exportar el ritmo sintáctico, las reducciones lexicográficas a las que procede necesariamente el traductor conducen a una gran modestia. Sin embargo esta choca con el poder ambiguo de dichos alcahuetes entre lenguas, que refieren dictados y herencias dispares. Al examinar varias traducciones al inglés y la francés, el autor muestra la radical heterogeneidad de diversos proyectos, que interrogan el destino de lo destructivo inherente al acto traductivo.
