Cet article propose une approche nouvelle de l’histoire du mouvement «homophile» français Arcadie (1954-1982).Après une analyse des raisons pour lesquelles Arcadie a été négligé par l’historiographie, l’article présente une brève histoire du mouvement,à partir d’archives inédites et d’entretiens enregistrés avec des dirigeants de l’organisation. Il dessine ensuite les grandes lignes de la vision morale et de la stratégie politique d’Arcadie, dont l’objectif était d’intégrer l’homosexualité dans la société à travers la démonstration de sa normalité – les mots-clés étaient «dignité» et «prudence» – et il analyse comment ce discours était perçu par les membres de «base». S’il est vrai que la politique prudente d’Arcadie était quelquefois contestée par ceuxci,l’article,combattant une approche anachronique de cette période, soutient qu’il faut réviser la «légende noire» d’Arcadie construite pendant les années 1970 par une nouvelle génération de militants «gais», qui accusaient le mouvement d’avoir intériorisé l’oppression ou la culpabilité imposées par la société hétérosexuelle.Au contraire, en plus du soutien moral et pratique qu’apportait à des milliers d’homosexuels (et quelques homosexuelles),Arcadie avait sa propre vision de l’authenticité homosexuelle, même si ce concept différait de celui de la génération post-soixante-huitarde.Finalement,l’article montre qu’il existait des tensions non résolues entre la tentative d’Arcadie de créer une communauté homosexuelle et son objectif d’intégration dans la société: c’est-à-dire entre l’idée que les homosexuels sont des personnes comme les autres et l’idée d’une identité spécifiquement homosexuelle.

This proposes a new approach to the history of the French «homophile» movement Arcadie (1954-1982).After an analysis of the reasons for the historiographical neglect of Arcadie,the article presents a brief history of the movement, based on archives which have not been used before and interviews with leader of the organisation.Then the article outlines the moral vision and political strategy of Arcadie whose objective was to integrate homosexuality into society by demonstrating its normality – the key words were «prudence» and «dignity» – and it analyses how this discourse was received by the rank and file members.If it was true that the prudent policy of Arcadie was sometimes contested from below, the article, rejecting an anachronistic approach to the period,argues the necessity to reject the demonisation of Arcadie which was carried out in the 1970s by a new generation of gay activists who accused the movement of having interiorised the oppression and guilt imposed by heterosexual society.On the contrary,quite apart from the moral and practical support which Arcadie offered to thousands of male homosexuals (and some lesbians) Arcadie had its own vision of homosexual authenticity,although different from that of post 68 radicals: one must avoid an anachronistic approach to the period.Finally the article show that there were unresolved tensions between Arcadie’s desire to create a homosexual community and its objective of integrating homosexuals into society at large – between the idea that homosexuals were individuals no different from any others and the idea that there was a specifically homosexual identity.
