L’histoire des minorités sexuelles en Roumanie est récente, avec durant la dernière décennie des accomplissements notables principalement au niveau législatif, mais aussi au niveau social,et la mise en avant du principe de la liberté individuelle et du respect de la vie privée.Les homosexuels roumains,héritiers d’une longue histoire d’interdits et de clandestinité, longtemps niés dans leur existence même, objets de réprobation et de rejet social, réclament aujourd’hui le droit d’exister et de se faire entendre. À travers une étude de cas prenant comme objet la plus importante association gay et lesbienne de Roumanie, Accept, cet article examine les premiers pas de la libération homosexuelle dans ce pays, jusqu’en 2001, quand les relations homosexuelles entre adultes consentants ont été dépénalisées. Un bref retour en arrière essaye de déchiffrer les racines de la criminalisation des personnes LGBT dans ce pays. De même,le contexte de l’adhésion du pays aux institutions européennes, ainsi que la reconstruction sociale radicale qui suit la chute du régime communiste, sont pris en compte pour mettre en lumière la dynamique des enjeux sociaux et politiques liés à la dépénalisation de l’homosexualité et le chemin parcouru par l’activisme gay et lesbien dans ce pays.

Romania has a short history when it comes to sexual minorities; only in the last decade has there been significant change,mainly concerning legal provisions, but also improvements in the social climate,through implementing principles of individual freedom and the respect of private life. Romanian homosexuals have long been victims of repression and forced to live in secret; they have been marginalized to live in shame and not socially tolerated.Today they request the right to exist and participate in the society. Mainly through a case study focused on the most important gay and lesbian organization,Accept,this article aims to examine the first steps of the homosexual liberation in this country until 2001,the year of decriminalizing same sex relationships. A brief overlook on the past tries to establish the roots of criminalization of LGBT people in Romania.The context of European integration and the radical social reconstruction following the collapse of the communist regime are important marks of this approach in the quest for clarifying the social and political dynamics of decriminalizing homosexuality and the accomplishments of gay and lesbian activism in this country.
