La table ronde annuelle de la Société d’Histoire Moderne & Contemporaine tenue à Paris le samedi 17 mars 2012 était consacrée aux développements récents et aux méthodes de l’histoire intellectuelle. En guise d’introduction, il est rappelé que l’appellation d’« histoire intellectuelle » recouvre bien des acceptions différentes, et qu’il faut se garder de céder trop vite aux catégorisations abruptes et aux proclamations faciles de nouveauté ou d’innovation absolues. Contrairement à certaines lectures rétrospectives fallacieuses, il existe bien en France une tradition d’histoire intellectuelle, qu’illustre notamment la trajectoire de la Revue de synthèse, même si, de Henri Berr à Jean-Claude Perrot, les approches ont évolué.

A new intellectual history ? Short introduction The annual round table of the Society of Modern & Contemporary History held in Paris on Saturday 17th March 2012 was dedicated to recent developments and methods in intellectual history. By way of introduction, it was reminded that the term “intellectuel history” encompasses many different meanings, and that we must avoid giving in too hastily to sharp categorizations and easy proclamations of absolute novelty or innovation. Contrary to some fallacious retrospective interpretations, it does exist a tradition of intellectual history in France, as the trajectory of the Revue de synthèse can display, even if we have seen approaches evolve from Henri Berr to Jean-Claude Perrot.
