Chez les historiens qui se sont penchés sur la police et le maintien de l’ordre en France, la référence à l’œuvre de Michel Foucault s’est longtemps limitée presque exclusivement à Surveiller et punir (1975). À quelques notables exceptions près, les historiens ont soit ignoré la réflexion du philosophe, soit contesté la valeur historique de ses recherches comme si Foucault était l’un des leurs. Cependant des travaux importants ont été influencés par son œuvre dès les années 1970 et 1980, en France et aux États-Unis. Depuis la fin des années 1990, la publication de ses cours et la réédition de nombreux textes jusque-là dispersés ont fait redécouvrir ses recherches sur la police et les arts de gouvernement, tandis que s’affirmaient des formes d’appropriation plus libres de son œuvre. L’historiographie de la police, elle-même en plein renouvellement, y a trouvé une source d’inspiration. Cet article présente un bilan provisoire des recherches récentes influencées par Foucault.

The history of policing after Foucault. An historiographical sketch Until recently, among the historians who studied police and law enforcement in France, the reference to the works of Michel Foucault had been almost exclusively limited to Discipline and Punish (1975). Except a few remarkable exceptions, historians ignored his reflections or contested the historical value of his research, as if Foucault was one of them. However, some valuable historical works were influenced by his work as early as in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Since the end of the 1990’s, with the publication of his courses and texts that were previously disseminated, his reflections on police and the arts of government were rediscovered, whereas historians appropriated themselves his work more freely. It has become a source of inspiration for the historiography of policing, which is totally renewed. This essay is a provisional presentation of the recent researches influenced by Foucault.
