Claire Mouradian shows how the Hamidian slaughters of the 1894- 1896 era are to be understood in the context of a long agony of the Ottoman Empire, which caught, first of all, by a logic of Islamisation first, then of Turkification, gradually dealt with all the national and religious minorities of the Ottoman Empire, the Armenians in particular, as they were (too) close to the old Russian enemy.
