Entrer en guerre ? Bien que la Première Guerre mondiale semble a priori ne pas exister dans l’historiographie latino-américaniste, les années 1914-1918 entraînent un certain nombre de mutations au sud du Rio Grande et constituent un prisme utile pour penser la place de l’Amérique latine dans le concert des nations au cours du premier XXe siècle. Neutres jusqu’en 1917, les États latino-américains sont alors confrontés à l’entrée en guerre des États-Unis qui jouent pleinement de leur puissance diplomatique et économique pour faire basculer une partie du sous-continent dans le conflit. Si la guerre ne transforme pas la condition périphérique de l’Amérique latine d’un point de vue géopolitique et économique, elle marque toutefois un tournant dans l’histoire des relations culturelles de l’Amérique latine.

Entrer en guerre ? Although the First World War seems to be absent from Latin American historical studies, the 1914-1918 period lead to several mutations at the south of the Rio Grande and forms a useful prism to consider the status of Latin America within the concert of nations during the first 20th century. Neutral until 1917, Latin American states were then confronted with the entry into the war of the United States, who used diplomatic and economic pressure to the full in order to push part of the sub-continent to join the Allies. If the First World War did not change the peripheral condition of Latin America in geopolitical and economic terms, it was nonetheless a turning point for its cultural history.
