Le Brexit constitue un défi majeur pour le Royaume-Uni et les relations anglo-écossaises. Le choix nettement pro-européen des Écossais lors du référendum de 2016 s’est inscrit en opposition à la volonté générale du pays, illustrant une divergence grandissante sur les plans identitaire et politique entre l’Écosse (et l’Irlande du Nord) et l’Angleterre (et le pays de Galle). Dans une nation polarisée autour de la question de son avenir institutionnel, la saga des négociations, le choix d’un « hard Brexit » et les incertitudes économiques ont contribué à relancer le débat sur l’indépendance, tout en modifiant ses termes. Aujourd’hui, la place de l’Écosse au sein du Royaume-Uni apparaît plus incertaine que jamais.

Brexit is a major challenge for the UK and for Anglo-Scottish relations. The clearly pro-European choice of the Scots in the 2016 referendum was in opposition to the will of the English and Welsh, and illustrative of a growing divergence in terms of both identity and politics between Scotland (& Northern Ireland), and England (& Wales). In a nation polarised around the question of its institutional future, the combination of endless negotiations with the choice of a ‘hard’ Brexit, and economic uncertainties have helped revive the debate on Scottish independence - while also changing its terms. Scotland’s place within the United Kingdom now seems more uncertain than ever.
