The success of Stalinism owes a lot to the fact that the urban population was constituted of former peasants who recognised in collectivism an elementary form of solidarity. This totalitarian culture reappears today in the way in which everyone agrees to condemn the Brejnev period, just as one before condemned Stalin. The government must now be strong and allow greater freedom of speech in order to defeat those who oppose democracy.
