Afin de conquérir les imaginaires de son temps, la « Fée électricité » se fraya une place dans la société sous la promesse qu’elle fera advenir un nouvel espace épuré des plaies de l’industrialisation. Pourtant, en portant le regard sur l’arrivée de l’électricité dans la ville de Dijon, cette étude montre qu’elle est loin d’être une histoire sans dissonance. Au contraire, tout au long de sa diffusion dans l’espace urbain dijonnais, le nouveau système technique qui l’accompagne a dû surmonter de nombreux défis pour pouvoir faire sa place dans une société et un environnement qu’il illumine tout autant qu’il brusque. En scrutant la gêne et l’appréhension suscitées par la précoce centrale électrique de 1885 puis par l’enveloppement de la ville sous le « filet » électrique, se donne à voir les accommodements mis en œuvre pour faciliter l’adhésion des Dijonnais à un environnement nouveau et potentiellement dangereux. Enfin, si son histoire fut, d’un côté, celle de la dilatation du champ du visible, de l’autre, elle fut celle de la dissimulation progressive aux yeux des abonnés dijonnais de toute une constellation électrique de fils et d’objets qui continuait pour autant à se développer.

To conquer the mentalities of her time, the « Electricity Fairy » carved out a place for herself in society under the promise of a new space purged of the blights of industrialization. However, by looking at the arrival of electricity in the city of Dijon, this investigation shows that it is far from being a history without dissonance. On the contrary, throughout its dissemination in the urban space of Dijon, the new electrical technical system had to overcome many challenges for the purpose of finding its place in a society and an environment that it illuminates as much as it sudden. By scrutinizing the discomfort and apprehension caused by the precocious power station of 1885 then by the envelopment of the city under the electric « net », we can see the accommodations established to facilitate the adhesion of the inhabitants of Dijon to an environment, new and potentially dangerous. Finally, if its history was, on the one hand, that of the dilation of the field of the visible, on the other, it was that of the progressive concealment from the eyes of Dijon subscribers of a whole electric constellation of wires and objects which still continued to develop.
