Afin de retrouver un établissement digne d’accueillir malades et indigents, la ville de Chalon débute en 1529 la construction d’un nouvel hôpital sur l’île Saint-Laurent. Sans l’aide de l’Église ou de la noblesse, elle parvient à le financer en faisant appel à la générosité des citadins et de la commune. Le soutien de l’Église se manifeste par des aides spécifiques sans que les religieux n’interviennent dans la gestion de la Maison-Dieu, entièrement administrée par la municipalité. Toutes les décisions sont débattues au cours des assemblées du conseil auxquelles participent les habitants qui sont à la fois partie prenante et donateurs.

To find an establishment worthy to welcome the sick and destitute people, the city of Chalon begins in 1529 the construction of a new hospital on Saint-Laurent Island. Without the Church or the nobility’s help, the town manages to finance it by appealing to the townspeople and the municipality’s generosity. The support of the Church manifests through specific aids without the religious intervening in the management of the Maison-Dieu, which is entirely administered by the municipality. All decisions are discussed during council meetings where residents, who are both stakeholders and donors, take part in.
