Certains patronymes normands proviennent de noms portés par les Vikings qui s’installèrent dans la future Normandie (ou par leurs descendants). Celui de « Turgot » en fait partie et correspond à l’anthroponyme norrois Þorgautr, forgé sur le nom du dieu Þórr. En dépit des erreurs manifestes que commettent les biographes d’Anne-Robert Turgot lorsqu’ils évoquent ses ancêtres, rien n’empêche de conclure que le Ministre de Louis XVI a très probablement de lointaines origines scandinaves.
