The paper analyzes the figure of the new pope Francisco, as a member of Argentine Catholicism to which it belongs and from his career as provincial of the Jesuits and archbishop of the Buenos Aires city. Specifically, it explores the conflict with Jalics and Yorio Jesuit priests, under his authority during the civil-military-religious dictatorship (1976-1983). His past, the deep crisis of Catholicism, the unprecedented resignation of Benedict XVI, the place of the papacy and the Vatican state, the charisma function, the media, global capitalism and time are factors to be considered on its future.

El artículo analiza la figura del nuevo papa, Francisco, a partir de una breve descripción del catolicismo argentino del cual surge y de su trayectoria como provincial de los jesuitas y arzobispo de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Profundiza el análisis sobre el conflicto con los sacerdotes jesuitas E. Jalics y A. Yorio durante la dictadura cívico-militar-religiosa (1976-1983). Su pasado, la notoria crisis del catolicismo, la inédita renuncia de Benito XVI, el lugar del papado y el estado del vaticano, el carisma de función, los medios de comunicación, el capitalismo global y el tiempo son factores que se toman en cuenta con perspectivas hacia el futuro.
