Le peuple américain a toujours considéré qu’il entretient un rapport privilégié avec Dieu. Il est, de ce fait, difficile aux États-Unis d’accepter que la sphère civile puisse être sécularisée et que les pouvoirs publics puissent être indifférents en matière religieuse. Il y est, en revanche, couramment admis que la prospérité du pays dépend du soutien divin, et qu’il convient de le solliciter à l’occasion des manifestations civiques.

The American people have always considered that they maintain a privileged relationship with God. It’s therefore uneasy in the US to accept that the civil sphere might be secularized and that the public powers might be religiously indifferent. On the contrary, it’s commonly acknowledged there that the welfare of the country depends on divine support, and that it needs to be asked for on the occasion of expressions of civism.
