Le journal « intime » naît à la fin du xviii e siècle, sous l’influence des Confessions de Rousseau, dans une triple ligne de recherche d’identité, d’écriture permettant une réflexion philosophique sur l’existence, de quête spirituelle. Trois auteurs illustrent bien ces trois possibilités : Benjamin Constant, Maine de Biran et Joseph Joubert, mais elles se mêlent aussi chez chacun d’entre eux.

The "personal" diary was born at the end of the 18th century, under the influence of Rousseau's Confessions. Its quest is threefold: for one's identity, for a literary form allowing for reflection on existence, and for the spiritual. Three authors serve as good illustrations of these three possibilities: Benjamin Constant, Maine de Biran, and Joseph Joubert – even though there may be some overlap of these three quests among the three authors.
