Cet article est consacré à l’étude de la mémoire des animaux dans les commentaires latins au De memoria et reminiscentia d’Aristote de la fin du xiiie siècle. Il s’intéresse plus particulièrement au lien entre mémoire et mouvement chez les animaux supérieurs. Contre une approche mécaniste qui explique les mouvements des animaux comme une réponse à un stimulus extérieur, l’argument central consiste à montrer qu’il est possible de trouver le motif présidant à leurs mouvements dans leur expérience, et qu’ainsi le rapport entre mémoire et mouvement devrait faire l’objet d’une réévaluation. Dans cet article, nous tâchons de défendre une approche intentionnelle du mouvement et de la mémoire animale, s’appuyant sur l’opération de l’estimative, et mettant en lumière la rationalité des comportements animaux.

This article is devoted to the study of animal memory in the Latin commentaries on Aristotle's De memoria et reminiscentia from the end of the 13th century. It takes a particular interest in the link between memory and movement in higher animals. Against a mechanistic approach which explains the movements of animals as responses to external stimuli, the central argument shows that it is possible to find the motive presiding over their movements in their experience, and thus that the relationship between memory and movement should be reassessed. In this article, we try to defend an intentional approach to animal movement and memory, based on the operation of estimation, and highlighting the rationality of animal behavior.
