À l’occasion de la tenue à Rome du synode sur la famille, la question du changement doctrinal et pastoral dans l’Église est ramenée sur le devant de la scène religieuse et politique. L’historien du catholicisme peut relever par exemple, la quasi disparition de certains problèmes, la norme demeurant intacte en théorie. À travers cet article, on voit ainsi s’esquisser les grandes lignes d’une sorte de schéma global d’adaptation catholique à la modernité fondé sur l’observation comparée d’un certain nombre de dossiers. Entre « thèse » et « hypothèse », la dialectique historique du catholicisme a tendance, depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle, a évoluer entre « acclimatation forcée » et « adaptation délibérée ».

Doctrinal “thesis” and pastoral “hypothesis”The Synod on the family held in Rome has brought the question of doctrinal and pastoral change in the Church to the forefront of the religious and political scene. A historian of Catholicism can note, for example, the near total disappearance of certain problems, though the norm remains intact in theory. This article enables us to see the outlines of a sort of global scheme for Catholic adaptation to modernity founded on comparative observation of a certain number of cases. Between “thesis” and “hypothesis”, the historical dialectics of Catholicism has tended, since the end of the eighteenth century, to develop between “forced acclimatation” and “deliberate adaptation”.
