L’article montre comment le vocabulaire de la réforme a disparu dans l’Église après le concile de Trente pour ne réapparaître que timidement à Vatican II, même si se concile a été un vrai concile de réforme. Il faut attendre 2005 et le discours du pape Benoît XVI à la Curie pour que le terme de réforme retrouve ses lettres de noblesse. Comment expliquer ces évolutions historiques et en percevoir la signification théologique pour la nature et la mission de l’Église catholique ? Tel est l’objet principal de l’article.

The paper shows how the vocabulary of reform disappeared in the Church after the Council of Trent to come again slowly at the Second Vatican Council, even if this council was a real council of reform. We have to wait 2005 and the address of pope Benedict XVI to the Roman curia to note the resurgence of the word « reform ». How can we explain these historical evolutions and discern their theological meanings for the nature and the mission of the Catholic Church ? This is the main topic of the paper.
