Sans se réduire au « religieux », auquel il est pourtant lié depuis toujours ou presque, le « spirituel » est un terme souvent utilisé mais rarement défini. Il s’avère néanmoins indispensable pour penser la spécificité de certains parcours historiques, politiques et/ou intellectuels, comme ceux de Gandhi, de Martin Luther King, du Dalaï Lama, d’Emmanuel Mounier, de Simone Weil mais aussi de Jaurès... S’essayant à cet effort de conceptualisation préalable du « spirituel », cet article mobilise ensuite ce dernier pour poser quelques questions clés à la gauche et à la France. Car nous vivons dans « le » pays où les questions « politico-spirituelles » – certains diraient « méta-politiques » – se posent désormais avec le plus d’acuité, du fait de son histoire, de son identité ; c’est-à-dire là où elles doivent absolument trouver des réponses, sous peine de blocage et de crise majeurs. Soit autant de problématiques où la gauche française – réconciliée avec le spirituel – pourrait, devrait trouver un second souffle, en cherchant à formuler un nouveau paradigme civilisationnel méta-moderne.

Even if it cannot be reduced to “religion”, to which it has nearly always been linked, the term “spiritual” is often used but rarely defined. However, this word is actually quite unavoidable when studying the specificity of some historical, political and/or intellectual pathways such as led by M.K. Gandhi, Martin Luther King, the Dalaï Lama, Emmanuel Mounier, Simone Weil or even Jean Jaurès... In an attempt to theorize beforehand the “spiritual”, this article mobilizes this concept in order to ask a few key questions to the political Left and to France as well. For we live in “the” country where the “political-spiritual” issues – some would call them “metapolitical” – are raised with a particular acuteness, due to its history, its identity ; thus a country where they must absolutely meet answers, at the risk of major blocking and crisis. If the French Left manage to cope with these issues, it could breathe a new life to France and to the Left itself, reconciled with the “spiritual” and attempting to formulate a new “metamodern” paradigm of civilization.
