Le fondateur des Assomptionnistes, Emmanuel d’Alzon (1810-1880), a œuvré toute sa vie pour conserver à l’Église sa visibilité dans une société française qui se déchristianisait.Observateur attentif des évolutions de son temps, il a porté un regard sans concessions sur une vie politique française agitée qu’il a largement commentée à travers ses correspondances, ses écrits et ses engagements, et c’est la place laissée à la religion qui a conditionné son soutien aux régimes qui se sont succédé.En observant et en acceptant le processus de démocratisation et de sécularisation, il s’est interrogé sur le rôle des chrétiens dans la société et a cherché à lutter pour conserver à l’Église un rôle social et moral. Ce soldat de Dieu désirait profondément que le message de l’Évangile ne s’appauvrisse pas au contact de la modernité et que la démocratie ne se détache pas du christianisme.

The founder of the Assumptionists, Emmanuel d’Alzon (1810-1880), worked all his life to maintain the Church’s visibility in a French society on the road to dechristianization.An attentive observer of the developments of his time, he took an uncompromising look at a troubled French political life that he commented on extensively through his correspondence, his writings and his commitments, and it is the place left to religion that has conditioned its support for successive regimes.By observing and accepting the process of democratization and secularization, he questioned himself on the role of Christians in society and sought to struggle to maintain a social and moral role to Church. This soldier of God deeply wished that the message of the Gospel would not be impoverished by contact with modernity and that democracy would not be detached from Christianity.
