La guerre qui détruisit la République Fédérale de Yougoslavie de 1991 à 1995 fut marquée, entre autres, par l’apparition de figures héroïques, dans les trois camps nationaux qui se cristallisèrent bientôt autour d’un pôle serbe, un croate et un musulman bosniaque. Il apparut partout le même phénomène anthropologique d’anciens brigands et criminels se transformant en modernes Robin des bois pour la gloire du groupe national en phase d’affirmation avec éventuellement des allures de justice sociale expéditive. Ces personnalités devinrent cependant à terme encombrantes pour les pouvoirs qui réussirent à s’établir et qui furent dès lors à la recherche d’un contrôle sans partage de la violence ainsi que d’un peu de respectabilité internationale. Leur popularité fut pourtant grande et la fascination qu’ils exercèrent interroge l’esprit critique sur les possibilités d’acceptation des méfaits par les groupes nationaux en lutte exacerbée les uns contre les autres, même à la fin du XXe siècle.

War destroyed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia between 1991 and 1995. The conflict was earmarked by several specifics among which the emergence of heroic figures, observed on the three sides that soon appeared and organized themselves as the Serbian, the Croatian and the Bosnian-Muslim nations. One could observe the same anthropological phenomenon of former brigands and criminals metamorphosing into modern Robin Hood in service of the national glory of each group that was asserting itself, with possible elements of summary social justice. However those persons finally turned into annoyances for regular State powers that were eager to monopolize violence and dedicated to gaining some international respectability. Yet their popularity had been large and the fascination they caused among the population question critical minds on the degree of acceptance of misdeeds by national groups in exacerbated struggle against each other, even at the end of the 20th century.
