RésuméÀ la fin de l’été 1937, l’hebdomadaire Sept annonce sa disparition. Celle-ci pourrait sembler anodine dans une période de difficultés pour la presse de manière générale. Quoi de surprenant, dès lors, qu’une publication fondée par des dominicains mette la clé sous la porte ? C’est qu’au-delà du motif financier invoqué, certains ont vu dans la fin du journal une intervention directe du Vatican dans les affaires françaises. Cet article s’appuie sur les fonds du pontificat de Pie XI ouverts à la consultation en 2006. Il apporte des éléments nouveaux pour comprendre la politique de Pie XI à l’égard du Front populaire. La suppression de Sept peut ainsi être interprétée comme un moment de redéfinition des frontières entre l’engagement religieux, moral et politique ainsi que l’indice d’un renforcement du rôle de la Curie romaine dans le contrôle de la presse catholique en France.

The Elimination of the Dominican Weekly SeptAugust 1937. The editorial board of the weekly magazine Sept announced the end of the publication, which could seem trifling during this harsh time for the press. But beyond the seeming financial motive for the closing of the newspaper, some people saw a direct intervention of the Vatican in French politics. This article is based on material from the secret Vatican archive of Pope Pie XI, opened to public consultation in 2006. It provides an insight into the policies of Pius XI concerning the Popular Front. The end of Sept can be interpreted as a crucial moment when the boundaries of politics, moral issues and religious commitments were reshaped. It also reveals the intensification of the role of the Vatican Curia in the control of the Catholic press in France.
