En 1941, le secrétaire d’État aux Beaux-Arts du régime de Vichy, Louis Hautecœur, subit la pression du ministère de la Propagande nazie pour attirer des artistes français en Allemagne. S’il constitue une liste d’architectes invitables, le voyage n’aura pas lieu. Cet article d’histoire contrefactuelle explore toute l’ambiguïté des attitudes professionnelles et personnelles des architectes français tant vis-à-vis du régime de Vichy que du Troisième Reich, à un moment où celui-ci cherche à faire connaître à l’étranger ses projets architecturaux monumentaux.

French Architects and the Third ReichIn 1941, the State Secretary for the Fine Arts of Vichy’s regime, Louis Hautecœur was pressured by the Ministry of Nazi Propaganda to entice French artists to travel to Germany. Although Hautecœur drafted a list of architects to invite, the trip never took place. This exercise in counterfactual history explores the deep ambiguity of the professional and personal attitudes of French architects with regard to both the Vichy regime and the Third Reich, at a time when the latter sought to publicise abroad its monumental architectural projects.
