RésuméLa thèse principale de cet article est qu’il existe un lien inhérent entre le rythme du changement social et l’expérience humaine de l’histoire. Si le rythme du changement est lent, le monde demeure essentiellement le même pour les trois générations qui partagent le même monde. Dans un tel monde, il n’y a pas d’histoire au singulier, mais seulement une multiplicité d’« histoires » historiques. Lorsque le rythme du changement s’accélère et atteint celui des générations, grands-parents et petits-enfants remarquent qu’ils vivent dans des mondes différents, que le passé est différent du futur. Dans un tel monde, où les générations deviennent porteuses d’innovation, l’histoire paraît avoir une direction. Cependant, dans l’âge postmoderne du 21e siècle, nous avons atteint un rythme de changement intragénérationnel. Le monde ne demeure pas le même pour une génération, il change tous les deux ans. Par conséquent, l’histoire perd sa direction : le rythme frénétique du changement apparaît contingent, fragmenté et épisodique. Le sens du mouvement historique est ainsi perdu et remplacé par l’expérience paradoxale de l’inertie essentielle. Comme on peut le voir avec les événements politiques actuels, ceci a des conséquences de grande portée sur la possibilité et la plausibilité des politiques démocratiques.

Historical Movement and Suspended History: the Relationship between Social Change and the Experience of HistoryThe core-argument of this paper is that there is an inherent link between the pace of social change and the human experience of history. If the pace of change is slow, the world stays essentially the same for the three generations which share a life-world. In such a world, there is no history in the singular, but only a multiplicity of historical “stories”. As the pace of change picks up and reaches the rate of generational exchange, grandparents and grandchildren notice that they live in different worlds, that the past is different from the future. In such a world, where generations become the bearers of innovation, history appears to have a direction. However, in the late-modern age of the 21st century, we have reached an intra-generational pace of change: the world does not even remain the same for one generation, it changes every couple of years. By consequence, history loses its direction: the frantic pace of change appears to be contingent, fragmented and episodic. Hence, the sense of historical movement is lost and replaced by the paradoxical experience of essential inertia. As can be seen from current political events, this has far-reaching consequences for the possibility and plausibility of democratic politics.
