RésuméNous sommes habitués à classer les différentes philosophies de l’histoire selon leur caractère progressiste ou conservateur, révolutionnaire ou nostalgique du passé. Walter Benjamin échappe à ces classifications. C’est un critique révolutionnaire de la philosophie du progrès, un adversaire marxiste du « progressisme », un nostalgique du passé qui rêve de l’avenir, un romantique partisan du matérialisme. Il est, dans tous les sens du mot, « inclassable ». Il ne s’agit pas d’une refléxion antinomique : marxisme et théologie, temps messianique et historicité révolutionnaire ne sont que les deux expressions d’une seule pensée, profondément originale, novatrice et cohérente.

Messianic Time and Revolutionary Historicity for Walter BenjaminWe are used to putting the various philosophies of history into categories such as progressive or conservative, revolutionary or nostalgic for the past. Walter Benjamin doesn’t fit into these categories. He was a revolutionary critic of the philosophy of progress, a Marxist adversary of “progressivism”, a nostalgic of the past who dreamt of the future, a romantic who supported materialism. He is, in all meanings of the word, unclassifiable. It is not a question of paradoxical thinking: Marxism and theology, messianic time and revolutionary historicity are two expressions of one profoundly original, innovative and consistent thinking.
