Cet article traite des conditions de production de la recherche dans le cadre des thèses en sciences humaines et sociales financées par Cifre (Convention industrielle de formation par la recherche). Il s’appuie sur les résultats d’une enquête par questionnaire menée en 2020 auprès de près de 400 doctorant·es et docteur·es en Cifre. On montre que les trajectoires de ces chercheur·ses, comme les conditions concrètes de réalisation de leur recherche doctorale, sont conditionnées par la disponibilité inégale de ressources matérielles et les formes d’encadrement au sein de la structure d’accueil. Bien plus qu’un « projet » individuel conçu en début de thèse, ce sont ces conditions particulières de réalisation du travail doctoral et une moindre socialisation académique qui destinent plutôt les doctorant·es en Cifre à une intégration professionnelle aux marges de l’enseignement et de la recherche.

This paper analyses doctoral work conditions and research production in the French “ Cifre“ framework. Through this agreement, a host organisation (e.g. a firm or a non-profit) finances the PhD candidate by offering her a salaried position, and collaborates with a research laboratory. This mechanism is increasingly promoted as an alternative financing scheme for PhDs. Drawing on the results of a questionnaire survey carried out in 2020 among nearly 400 Cifre PhD students, our analysis shows that their trajectories and the concrete conditions in which they carry out their doctoral research, are conditioned by the unequal availability of material resources and the forms of supervision within the host organisation. These specific work conditions and a weaker socialisation to academia, rather than an individual “career plan” devised at the beginning of the PhD, steer Cifre researchers towards a professional integration outside the academic world.
