La situation nord-irlandaise possède un intérêt évident pour une étude du traitement médiatique du phénomène terroriste, et de l'impact des attentats du 11 septembre sur ce traitement. Notre étude révèle que si, durant les quelques années précédant les attentats du World Trade Centre, le discours médiatique à l'encontre des groupes paramilitaires nord-irlandais s?était considérablement adouci, à la faveur de leur inclusion dans le processus de paix, les attentats du 11 septembre ont, par amalgame, provoqué le retour d?une condamnation sans appel. Depuis lors, les représentations médiatiques du phénomène terroriste demeurent marquées par le registre du fantasme et de l'émotionnel, et surtout par un mimétisme évident vis-à-vis des discours officiels des gouvernements.

Reports in the Media of the Terrorist Phenomenon ; What Can We Learn from the Northern Ireland Case ? The Northern Ireland situation is of obvious interest for a study of the treatment by the media of terrorism and of the impact of the September 11th attacks on this treatment. This study will show how, during the years just preceding the attacks on the World Trade Centre, the language used by the media with reference to the paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland had somewhat softened, especially when they became involved in the peace process. However the September 11th attacks have, by amalgam, turned the tables round on them once and for all. Now, presentations by the media of terrorism are marked by highly emotional language from the field of our worst fantasies and moreover, this language has become again a mirror of the official government position.
