La question de la « source du sentiment religieux » s’est posée depuis Freud et relève certainement du domaine de la psychanalyse. Cependant, elle est avant tout le lieu d’un débat interdisciplinaire. Nous proposons dans cet article, en dialogue avec un philosophe et un théologien, une réflexion sur les principaux aspects de la structuration psychique qui interviennent dans la dynamique spirituelle. Après un parallèle entre mystique et psychose, nous nous intéressons plus particulièrement aux mécanismes identificatoires spéculaires. L’être humain apparaît alors marqué par un singulier paradoxe : il porte le sceau d’un clivage narcissique originaire tout en étant travaillé « de l’intérieur » par une dynamique relationnelle qui se révèle ainsi à la fois unificatrice et constitutive.

Spirituality and Identity Organisation The question of identifying the “source of religious feelings” has been much examined since Freud first raised it and is most clearly linked to the field of psychoanalysis. However, other disciplines must also be called into play. In this article, alongside a philosopher and a theologian, we reflect on the principal aspects of psychic organisation involved in spiritual processes. A parallel will be drawn between mysticism and psychosis and we will take a close look at specular identification mechanisms. The human being appears then as marked by a very singular paradox – he bears the stamp of a primal narcissistic splitting which functions as both a unifying and constitutive force.
