RésuméCet article aborde deux problèmes concernant l’adverbe interrogatif comment. Le premier est celui de son ambiguïté entre une interprétation de manière (commune à son emploi comme substitut d’adjectif et d’adverbe de manière) et son interprétation de moyen. Le second est celui que pose l’impossibilité de remplacer par comment certains adverbes signifiant pourtant la manière. Les faits examinés conduisent à la conclusion que comment constitue un modifieur restrictif, permettant de passer d’un concept de genre (porté par un constituant N, V ou v) à un concept d’espèce de ce genre. Les cas où il est exclu alors qu’un adverbe de manière est possible sont des cas où, l’adverbe modifiant non pas un concept générique, mais déjà individualisé, il n’a pas de valeur restrictive.

In this article I try to answer two related questions concerning the French adverb comment. First, comment has a manner interpretation as well as a mean / instrument one, a fact suggesting that there must be something common to both meanings. Second, in certain contexts some manner adverbs cannot be replaced by comment. Distributional and semantic data strongly suggest that comment is, in its two readings, a restrictive modifier, which applies to a generic concept (corresponding to a category N, V or v) to produce a specific one. This may explain why comment cannot fill the place of certain manner adverbs, namely those modifying an entire VP, where the concept corresponding to V is already restricted.
