Cet article propose des outils logiques et métapsychologiques pour comprendre la façon spécifiquement chrétienne de faire face à la mort et de témoigner de son adhésion à la figure et au message du Christ. La notion de martyre étant intimement liée à celle de sacrifice, il traite, dans une première partie, de la question d’un fantasme sacrificiel originaire, celui-ci à visée universelle. Une seconde partie est centrée sur le vécu chrétien et aborde le martyre en rendant compte de ce « style » de vie qu’est la sainteté, puis en tentant de comprendre en quoi la mort du Nazaréen a été comprise et interprétée par ses disciples comme un sacrifice. Cela permet d’expliquer pourquoi l’identification radicale à la figure du Christ peut être comprise comme une invitation à passer par ses mêmes souffrances. Cette étude se termine par une approche de la figure d’Ignace d’Antioche, martyrisé au début du premier siècle, prenant appui sur la lettre qu’il écrivit à la communauté chrétienne de Rome alors que, prisonnier, il faisait route vers la capitale pour y être exécuté.

A Few Pointers in the Consideration of Christian Martyrdom This article presents a series of logical and meta-psychological tools for the analysis of the specifically Christian stance on death and of how to bear witness to one’s devotion to the figure and message of Christ. The notion of martyrdom is intimately linked with that of sacrifice and this article will discuss the question of originary sacrifice fantasies instilled here with a universal dimension. It will then focus on the singularity of Christian experience and explore the question of martyrdom in the light of holiness in ‘styles’ of living, before going on to look at the ways in which the death of Jesus of Nazareth was understood and interpreted by his disciples as a sacrifice. This in turn sheds light on how radical identification with Christ may be understood as an invitation to endure a suffering on a par with his. The article ends with an examination of Ignatius of Antioch who was martyred in the early years of the first century, based on a letter he wrote to the Christian community in Rome while he was a prisoner and being taken to the capital to be executed.
