Cet article propose d’approfondir les rapports et les multiples interconnections entre humanisme, devoir humanitaire et châtiment, d’habitude dissociés ou en conflit ; et de montrer leur éventuelle compatibilité. Le « meurtre de l’hôte », du xenos, dans l’Antiquité grecque nous servira d’exemple privilégié afin de procéder à la comparaison de la pensée antique et des acquis de la postmodernité, du point de vue d’une philosophie de la sanction pénale.

Humanism and Punishment. Murdering the Outsider. This article explores the relationship and multiple connections between humanism, humanitarian duties and punishment. These notions are generally presented in dissociation or opposition, but here we shed light on their possible mutual compatibility. The ‘murder of the outsider’, the xenos of Ancient Greek, provides a key insight into the comparisons established here between the underlying principles of the ancient world and the established practices of the Postmodern era, from the perspective of the philosophy of penal sentencing.
