Bien que les chemins de Freud et de Bachelard ne se soient rencontrés historiquement que partiellement, la non congruence de leurs théories est cependant à entendre non comme une opposition de principes mais comme une divergence dans les objectifs. Le surréalisme, la psychanalyse, la phénoménologie, participent de ce que Bachelard lui-même a nommé une « rupture épistémologique » dans la relation à la réalité et en cela avaient bien vocation à se rejoindre.

Although Freud and Bachelard’s paths only partially crossed from the historical point of view, the incongruence of their theories should be understood not as an opposition of principles, but as rooted in diverging objectives. Surrealism, psychoanalysis and phenomenology are all expressions of what Bachelard himself referred to as an ‘epistemological rupture’ with reality, and as such all three are predestined to come together.
