Le propos de cet article vise à illustrer en quoi la violence contenue dans la rencontre avec des personnes ou des formes de vie totalement différentes, est révélée et sublimée dans la figure du monstre. Nous postulons que le monstre, en tant qu’expression esthétique et entité biologique, permet aux hommes de se définir humains en proposant de penser la distinction entre l’humain et l’animal. À partir de la notion d’altération que nous distinguons de celle d’altérité, nous développons comment le monstre participe à la définition du consensus social et permet de limiter les effets de la violence provoquée par l’échec du processus d’identification.

Monsters as an Aesthetic Distortion and a Way of Apprehending what it Means to be Human. This article aims to analyse how the violence at work when we encounter people or life forms with which we have nothing in common is revealed and sublimated through the figure of the monster. We postulate that the monster, both an aesthetic and a biological entity, provides humankind with the means of defining itself as human by establishing a difference between what us human and what is animal. We will begin by exploring the notion of distortion as distinct from that of otherness as a means of demonstrating how monsters are instrumental in creating social consensus and limiting the violence caused by the failure of identification processes.
