Situated at the watershed between ideal and sublimation, recognition and thinking, and dividing space between the secular and sacred, Freemasonry provides a fine clinical example of actions which are underpinned both by brotherly and oedipal complexes. This in turn raises the question of ‘adopting a stance towards another mental life’, and allows us to further explore Freud’s meta-psychology of the structure of crowds, situated at the watershed of power and desire, narcissism and libido of the object, love and hatred.
