Incapable de penser par lui-même, tel se veut le conformiste, et donc, prétend-il incapable de nuire… Cette incapacité lui est payée de retour par le soutien du groupe auquel il aliène sa capacité de penser. Le conformisme constitue donc un danger considérable sous ses dehors apathiques et anodins. Sur le plan éthique, il peut réduire à zéro le sens de la solidarité humaine, faisant de la foule un objet dangereux et incontrôlé parce que manipulable à volonté.

Conformists wish to appear as being incapable of thinking for themselves and would have us believe that they are thus incapable of doing any harm… This incapacity is reciprocated in the form of support from the group, whose members are in turn alienated from their own capacity for thought by the conformist. Conformism, it might be argued, is therefore a considerable danger, despite its apathetic, anodyne outer appearance. From the ethical point of view, it has the capacity to wipe away all sense of human solidarity, causing the masses to become a dangerous, uncontrolled object which may be manipulated at will.
